About the Project

Gretsch Guitars โ€” Redefining a Legacy Brand for the Modern Player

Gretsch Guitars carries over 130 years of musical heritage. But their digital storefront had not kept pace with the brand's depth or the expectations of today's players. The existing e-commerce experience leaned heavily into a narrow rockabilly aesthetic, leaving entire segments of Gretsch's audience underserved and making product discovery unnecessarily difficult.

This was the first full e-commerce redesign in the brand's history. Gretsch needed a digital experience that honored its legacy while opening the door to every kind of player who picks up a Gretsch, from jazz to country to alternative to contemporary.

OwlMan was brought in to lead the end-to-end UX/UI redesign, from strategy and design system creation through to full design handoff, completing the entire engagement in just over two months.

Key Achievements

  • First E-Commerce Redesign in Brand History. Delivered a complete ground-up reimagining of the Gretsch digital storefront, the first of its kind for the brand, modernizing the experience while preserving its iconic identity.

  • New Navigation Architecture. Redesigned the global navigation to make product discovery intuitive and efficient, surfacing key categories, collections, and instruments in a way that reflects how players actually shop.

  • Integrated Dealer Finder. Embedded a Gretsch dealer locator directly into the shopping experience, bridging the gap between digital discovery and physical retail.

  • New Design System and Brand Color Palette. Built a comprehensive design system from scratch including a refined color palette, typography standards, and component library that scales across the full product catalog and future platform needs.

  • Inclusive Brand Expression. Shifted the visual language beyond a single genre identity, creating an experience that speaks authentically to the full range of Gretsch players without diluting the brand's character.

Design Strategy

  • Understated Defiance. A single creative theme anchored every design decision, bold enough to honor Gretsch's irreverent legacy, restrained enough to feel premium and modern. The result is a brand expression that commands attention without demanding it.

  • Audience Expansion Without Identity Loss. Rather than chasing a broader demographic through generic design, the strategy deepened the brand's authenticity in ways that resonate across genres and generations.

  • Platform-Agnostic Architecture. Designed with intentional flexibility as Gretsch evaluated and finalized their platform choice throughout the engagement, ensuring every component and system could translate cleanly regardless of the final build environment.

  • Discovery-Led UX. Restructured the shopping journey around how musicians explore instruments, by feel, by genre, by collection, rather than forcing users into rigid category hierarchies.

Outcome

In just over two months, OwlMan delivered a complete redesign of one of the most storied names in guitar history. What began as an outdated storefront became a fully realized digital brand experience, one capable of welcoming a jazz player and a rockabilly player through the same front door without either feeling like an afterthought.

The new Gretsch design system gives the brand a scalable foundation for future growth. The navigation, dealer integration, and refined visual language position Gretsch to compete as a premium digital experience and not just a legacy catalog.

Design handoff completed. Launch forthcoming.
